Stepping Out From the Shattered Place

The Lord has had me on an incredible journey. I finally feel like I am stepping out from the shattered place into Gods healing hands.

I love my neighbors

I was out late last night and on my way home I forgot to stop and get coffee. Anyone who knows me well knows this was a baaad thing come this morning when I had no coffee. I tried to be a trooper and get the paperwork done that I was working on with out coffee. About half way through I grabbed my keys and was heading out the door. I was half way to the car when it occurred to that Lynn was home, (same neighbor who left me my birthday brownies)and she has often told me if you are out of coffee come here. She is a flight attendant and all those little coffees in the hotel rooms she brings home. She dug into her stash and gave me about 9 packages of coffee, then said I am going to the store later what kind do you want.

We have long held the ideal, you need it, I got it, it's yours. We have borrowed back and forth for over a decade now. It's more then just the things though. I have a note on my fridge from 2002 I found it in a box she shipped to me when I went the Olympics. Just a little note telling me to have a wonderful time and she loves me. When both her father and step father took ill at the same time and died within a 2 months of each other, I did all I could to help her care for them and her. When she is away her cat lives with me. We have called each other for the emergency animal care on more then once! Lynn's sister lives across the street from us and one of her oldest friends is at the end of the road. We all help each other. We are all single women and we rely on each other but it's more then that we are a community. I honestly know my neighbors their ups and their downs and they honestly know mine.

It is all about the support in this modern age many people don't know their neighbors people move more often and lives are busy. We tend to be self absorbed the people who live next to us are often not high enough on our radars to make much of an impact. The neighbor coming over with a cake or casserole when we move in welcoming us to the neighborhood is a thing of the past. The welcome wagon now comes via the mail and is an envelope of coupons.

The welcome cake is a throw back to the 40s and 50s but the idea of being a community goes back to biblical times. Without community the human race would not have survived to modern times. Granted the small neighbor community tended to be families, and in modern day our neighbors don't tend to be family any more. The wider the world gets with the internet and all of the connections it allows the more our small communities fade away. It is a loss to our culture. My neighbors and I treat each other as family because we are in close proximity and can be there for each other. If we did not live so close would we be the friends that we are, I don't think so. I think it is only the fact that we live so near and embrace the ideal of what it means to be a neighbors that we have created our little community.

I am so thankful for the community we have here. I feel I am lucky to have people near me who hold to the same ideal and are willing to share their lives and coffee with me!
